This week promises to be another excellent meetup. We'll have two speakers presenting for 20-30 minutes each, a format we used with great success at our very first meetup. We're also moving downtown for the month of September. archer>malmo, a Memphis based full-service ad agency, has been kind enough to host and feed us in their building at 65 Union Avenue in the heart of downtown Memphis.
This month's presentations:
Your Framework Sucks - Paul Jones
Why do businesses and developers write their own frameworks when so many public ones already exist? Is it true that all frameworks suck, but some suck less than others? Could it be that building your own framework is worse in the short run *and* in the long run? Find the answers to these questions and more as I elaborate on my blog posts titled "... But Some Suck Less Than Others" and "The Framework as Franchise."
TDD in PHP: A Brief Example - Jeremy Kendall
Test Driven Development is a very simple concept, but putting it into practice can be very challenging. What are the benefits? What are the drawbacks? How in the world does TDD work? Listen to a brief answer to those questions, and then watch and learn as I either wildly succeed or spectacularly fail to live code an example of Test Driven Development in practice.
I look forward to seeing each of you on Thursday night!
Is there free parking or anything I need to know b4 I get lost in Memphis?
Regarding parking, the garage called Parking Can Be Fun (79 Union Ave) is your best bet. It's the cheapest downtown and is literally one building away from Archer. They only take cash. If you forget cash, there's a garage on Front at Madison that accepts cards. It's a little further away, but still only about 2 blocks.
Thanks for the parking info, Patrick. I understand that you'll be in the lobby directing folks to the meeting?
More on parking: Member Darren Remington emailed this to me today: "Cheapest parking (and safest) that I found in the area is the Peabody Place garage - it's about a block down from Front St. on Peabody. Should still be $1.00/hr and they take debit/credit cards"
I am not a PHP person yet, just want to participate and get to know it
