Our presenter this month is Memphis PHP's own Paul Jones. Paul is an accomplished PHP developer and presenter, the developer of the Solar PHP framework, and he's a great guy to boot. While I frequently bluff my way through presentations (don't tell anyone), Paul really knows his stuff. Don't miss Paul's presentation on Benchmarking.
Benchmarking
This talk will begin with an outline of the differences between "profiling" code blocks and "benchmarking" a system or subsystem. After a short discussion on the purpose and intent of running benchmarks, we will see how to set up a benchmarking system, including the "ab" tool and the experimental controls needed when doing comparative benchmarks. Finally, there will be real-life examples of comparative benchmarks between some major frameworks, and a description what the results indicate (and just as importantly what they do *not* indicate).
We've been meeting downtown a lot lately, but we've met in Midtown and East Memphis as well. I think Collierville might be a little far to drive for some of us, but downtown is far to drive for you guys. Any thoughts on where we might meet in the middle?
Paul Jones gave one of the best technical presentations I have heard in a while. I am not a PHP developer per se, but this group is great none-the-less.
Collierville Public Library is free and near my house.
